The Najdi calendar splits the year into twelve seasons that begin with the rising of well-known stars, each with its own character of heat, cold or rain. We are currently in Al-Wasm; pick any season to see what its weather is like and what to prepare for, bearing in mind that Hafar Al-Batin can be hotter or cooler than central Arabia depending on its location and altitude.
Al-Wasm marks the true start of autumn in central Arabia and is the best-loved season of the year. The air turns mild and the nights grow cool, and the first rain-bearing clouds arrive after the long summer. Its rains are called 'wasmi' because they 'mark' the land with greenery and later bring the desert truffles and spring grasses. It is the favourite time for desert trips, and the moment to prepare for winter.
Al-Murabbaniyah is the heart of winter and the coldest season of the year, beginning around the winter solstice when nights are longest. Temperatures drop sharply, frost becomes frequent in the north and centre, and winter rains arrive on cold northerly winds. It is the season of gathering around the fire, and the saying goes that even the daytime water turns cold. Dress warmly and protect crops from frost.
Al-Shabt is the second winter season; the cold stays severe at its start and only eases gradually towards its end. It brings rapid changes between clear cold days and cloudy rainy spells, with dry northerly winds that sharpen the chill. A proverb says its cold 'bites'. Keep the heating on and watch frost warnings in the north.
Al-Aqarib is the last winter season, when the weather shifts from cold to mild; its name ('the scorpions') comes from the intermittent stings of cold. Temperatures swing between warm days and cold nights, and the first warm southerly winds begin to blow, sometimes raising dust. Its three 'Sa'd' stars follow one another until the cold finally breaks. Expect changeable weather and the usual seasonal colds.
Al-Humaymayn opens spring around the equinox; the name refers to the first warmth after winter's cold. Days are pleasant with mildly cool nights, and cumulus clouds and thunderstorms become common, especially over the western and southern highlands. The desert greens and blooms if the autumn and winter rains were good. Beware of flash floods in wadis during thunderstorms.
Al-Dhira'ayn is mid-spring: daytime warmth rises noticeably and the first hot days appear, while nights stay mild. Southerly and easterly winds pick up and dust storms become frequent, and thunderstorms continue over the highlands and the south-west. It is the last comfortable window for desert outings before the summer heat. Watch dust alerts and wadi flooding during storms.
Al-Thurayya is the first summer season: heat intensifies and days grow long, and its dry, fierce sun is said to 'scorch'. The dry northerly 'bawarih' winds raise dust across the centre and east, and rain all but disappears except over the south-western highlands. The rising of the Pleiades traditionally marked the start of the harvest. Avoid the midday sun and drink plenty of water.
Al-Tuwaybi' is a short season that 'follows' the Pleiades; it is intensely hot and dry. Temperatures climb quickly in the centre and east, dust-raising winds are common, and humidity rises along the coasts. It marks the real onset of peak summer in most of the Kingdom. Limit outdoor activity by day and watch for heat stress.
Al-Jawza' is the peak of summer, beginning at the solstice when days are longest; it is split into a first and second half. Temperatures reach their yearly maximum in the centre and east, with dry 'bawarih' winds early on and high humidity on the coasts. It is said to 'boil' the water in storage barrels. Stay in cooled spaces at peak hours and avoid daytime desert travel.
Al-Mirzam is a short mid-summer season notorious for its searing heat, said to 'crack the pebbles'. Winds calm, making the air stifling, and humidity climbs sharply on both the eastern and western coasts. Nights stay hot and offer little relief. Guard against sunstroke and move heavy work to early morning or after sunset.
Al-Kulaybayn is the last of the intense summer seasons and, in many areas, the hottest, with heavy coastal humidity. Towards its end the first hints of change appear as late nights turn slightly cooler, especially in the north. Monsoon-season thunderclouds are frequent over the Asir, Al-Baha and Jazan highlands. Keep up heat precautions; its end signals the coming rise of Suhail.
The rising of Suhail (Canopus) is the most famous sign that summer's grip is breaking; the saying goes 'when Suhail rises, the night cools'. Heat eases gradually, first in the late night, while early days remain hot. Dry northerly winds return with late-summer dust storms, and the southern highlands see the first autumn rains. Farmers prepare for the winter planting season and for the cool of Al-Wasm.
